Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the patterns of host plant utilization by herbivorous insects in natural communities. We tested four hypotheses aiming to understand the pattern of attack by gall-inducing insects on the dioecious shrub, Baccharis pseudomyriocephala (Asteraceae). The shrub occurs in the Parque Estadual do Itacolomi, Southeastern Brazil, and supports ten species of galling insects. The following hypotheses were tested: i) male plants are more attacked by galling insects than female plants; ii) larger plant modules are preferentially attacked by galling insects; iii) galling insects perform better on larger modules than on smaller modules; iv) galling insects increase in abundance with meristematic availability. Myriophyllum aquaticum (Vell.) Verdc. is native of South America and has a pantropical distribution. This species has been cited as dioecious, monoecious and polygamous. The purpose of this paper was to contribute to the discussion of its sexual condition, based on herbarium material, and supported by field observations. Herbarium material from Argentina was examined. Also, twenty branches from the Punta Lara Nature Reserve (Buenos Aires, Argentina) were periodically sampled to record the sex of flowers present on each whorl during the flowering period of 2002. We investigated the reproductive biology of Protium spruceanum (Benth.) Engler in vegetation corridors of secondary Atlantic forest in Lavras, southern Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The reproductive phenology was investigated fortnightly over a one year period. Floral biology studies involved pollen viability analysis, nectar production, stigmatic receptivity, pollen tube growth, visiting insect species and visit rates. The small, pale yellowish flowers (0.3-0.4 cm diameter) are functionally unisexual and organized in dense inflorescences (ca. 45 flowers). Revision of Ryssopterys and transfer to Stigmaphyllon (Malpighiaceae) Naturalis

Molecular evidence shows the Old World genus Ryssopterys (Malpighiaceae) nested within the New World genus Stigmaphyllon; therefore, Ryssopterys is here transferred to Stigmaphyllon as subg. Ryssopterys. The subgenera share most vegetative and fruit characters. Subgenus Stigmaphyllon comprises 92 species characterized by hermaphrodite, bilaterally symmetrical flowers. Subgenus Ryssopterys includes 21 species that appear androdioecious but are probably functionally dioecious; the flowers are either hermaphrodite but likely functionally female, owing to inaperturate pollen, or male with a rudimentary gynoecium. The interaction patterns between the dioecious shrub Baccharis concinna Barroso (Asteraceae) and its speciose galling insect community were studied in southeastern Brazil. Two hypotheses were tested in this study: "the differential reproduction and growth hypothesis" that predicts that male plants present fewer reproductive structures and are larger than female plants; and the 'sex-biased herbivory hypothesis' that predicts that male plants support a larger abundance of insect galls than female plants. Plants did not show sexual dimorphism in growth (= mean leaf number). However, male plants had longer shoots and a lower average number of inflorescences than female plants. Dioecy is characterized by a complete separation of sexual functions on male and female plants. It has evolved many times in flowering plants and is widespread among distinct Angiosperm families. It is viewed as a reproductive strategy to reduce endogamy, and to promote optimal resource allocation between male and female sexual functions. Neea theifera is a common species in Cerrado, neotropical savannas in Brazil, but information regarding its reproductive biology is still incomplete.
